| Sven Doehner, PhD, MFA, is a Junguian Archetypal psychotherapist, educator, workshop guide, and writer. Trained in the Depth Psychology of C.G. JUNG and James HILLMAN, he has given courses and led workshops on themes relevant to personal and transpersonal development since 1981, in Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Mexico, Peru, the Soviet Union, the United States and Uruguay.
Innovative in his alchemical approach to personal transformation through working with the IMAGES and SOUNDS in our DREAMS, PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS and LIFE SITUATIONS, Sven combines the ancestral wisdom of native traditional medicine with that of Depth Psychology to enable the individual to discover new possibilities for more authentic expressions of his or her being.
Born in Mexico City, his initial University studies were in the arts, at Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C. (1966 - 1970), and later at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in Chicago, Illinois (1970 - 1972).
In 1975, Sven created Push Process, S.A., the first professional photographic laboratory in Mexico, which grew to 160 employees under his direction – until 1994, when he retired from the business word to dedicate himself full time to his work in the consulting room, to guiding workshops to explore different healing rites and transformational arts, and to explore the space where the psychotherapeutic meets the spritual.
Returning to the academic world in 1981, he earned a masters degree in Counseling Psychology at East Texas State University, near Dallas, Texas, and later, in 1999, earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology at Newport University, in San Diego, California. During the four years he lived in Dallas, Sven worked for a year with Dr. Douglas Puryear at the Psychiatric Emergency Room at Parkland Memorial Hospital, and as a volunteer in the Hospice Program of the Visiting Nurses Association, and was an active participant in the Depth Psychology Programs of The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture.
Sven began to explore ancestral healing and spiritual practices with mayan, zapotec and mixtec native healers in the south of Mexico in 1986, and in addition to nine years of psychoanalytic work with James Hillman, participated in the training program of the C.G. Jung Institute – Boston for six years, before returning permanently to Mexico in1991.
In 2001, Sven trained in the Alchemical Theater techniques of Pantheatre with Enrique Pardo in the south of France. Between 2002 and 2005, he trained in Bioenergetics with Dario Fainstein in his Proyecto Ruaj. Continuing his personal search, in the summer of 2008 Sven will be certified as a Movement Educator in Mark Taylor’s School of Body-Mind Movement.
In addition to directing the program of the Instituto de Psicología Profunda en México, Sven attends to his consulting room in Mexico City, guides workshops in Transformational Work with the Images and Sounds in our Dreams and Lives in different locations around the world, and leads training programs in the Depth Psychology of C.G. JUNG and James HILLMAN.
Sven also supervises the development of the Casa/Hacienda EL ENCUENTRO (www.elencuentro-oaxaca.com), a traditional zapotec house he designed and built in the Oaxaca Valley, out of adobe, river stones and tropical woods, with 16 bedrooms, a heated swimming pool, panoramic meeting rooms, gardens, fountains and a Temazcal (a native sweat-lodge) - which is used today as a center for workshops and retreats.
He is a founding member of the Consejo Inter-Americano Sobre Espiritualidad Indígena, and since 1996 is an active member of the Association for the Study of Dreams. He is 59 years old, thas three children, and lives and works in Mexico City and Oaxaca – and is writing a book entitled Soundscapes in Image Work.
